BUCKHORN, Amador County — Buckhorn is one of the communities with a dedicated evacuation-route planning map published by the Amador Fire Safe Council. The map can help residents become familiar with roads and alternate routes before wildfire season or a storm emergency.
The nonprofit’s Community Evacuation Route Maps directory includes a specifically named Buckhorn map among its community sheets. The larger mapping project was developed with Cal Fire, the Amador County Sheriff’s Office, other fire agencies and the Amador County Transportation Commission.
What the planning map is for
The fire-safe council says the route maps help agencies and residents understand the local road network, evacuation capacity and roads that may require vegetation management. Reviewing a map in advance can help a household identify possible exits and discuss transportation needs.
What the map cannot tell you
Do not treat a planning map as live evacuation directions. Wind, fire, downed trees and traffic can change which roads are safe. Maps produced in earlier years are particularly unsuitable for deciding whether a road is open right now. In an active incident, follow official alerts, law enforcement and incident-command instructions, even if they differ from a preplanned route.
Make plans for pets and residents who need additional time, and keep devices able to receive local alerts. For immediate danger, call 911.
